Summer programs are a great way to gain experience in your field of interest, build your resume, network with professionals, and could also be a gateway to admission at your top choice college!
So, how do I search for summer programs and how do I apply? This can be tricky depending on what type of summer program you are looking for. If you are looking for an educational summer program, then this could be as easy as checking the websites at your local colleges/universities. As a coach, I usually search for “summer programs for high school students” on a college’s website. Once the search is complete, voilà! Various summer programs pop up and are usually separated in to different categories. This will help you determine what that college offers.
Participating in a summer program is key for those who do not have a clue on what career or major they plan to pursue. Through a summer program you can explore numerous fields of study. This can stimulate career and major research and help you finalize you career and major choice.
Did you know that in some states there are state-funded programs that help provide high school students with internships? I know, this seems too good to be true. For instance, the Summer Youth Employment Program is a program that helps high schools students work in the field of their interest. I suggest researching this program to see if your state is a participant.
The best thing about doing an internship is that you have the opportunity to get paid. I mean who doesn’t want more money? You could save the money and put is toward your cost of attendance for college, or you could save up for that fancy car you’ve been eyeing. When it comes down to the nitty gritty, my best advice is to just GET INVOLVED. Don’t waste your summer being idle. You want to take advantage of the opportunity to grow and evolve.
